On the Estimation of Sequestered Infected Erythrocytes in Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria Patients

چکیده
The aim of this paper is to give a method for the estimation of total parasite burden of the patient and the rate of infection in a malaria’s intra-host model by using control theory tools. More precisely, we use an auxiliary system, called observer or estimator, whose solutions tend exponentially to those of the original model. This observer uses only the available measurable data, namely, the values of peripheral infected erythrocytes. It provides estimates of the sequestered infected erythrocytes, that cannot be measured by clinical methods. Therefore this method allows to estimate the total parasite burden within a malaria patient. Moreover, our constructed observer does not use the uncertain infection rate parameter β. In fact, we derive a simple method to estimate this parameter β. We apply this estimation method using real data that have been collected when malaria was used as therapy for neurosyphilis by the US Public Health Service.

The Use of Crude Plasmodium falciparum Antigens for Comparison of Antibody Responses in Patients with Mild Malaria vs. Cerebral Malaria
Background: Cerebral malaria (CM) is one of the major causes of death in African populations infected with Plasmodium falciparum. Only 1% of infected subjects develop CM. The reasons for these differences are not fully understood, but it is likely that the host humoral response against blood-stage antigens plays a role in protection from malaria, although the precise targets and mechanisms medi...

Background& Objectives: Inspite of intensive worldwide efforts to reduce its transmission, malaria remains the most serious and widespread protozoal infection of humans. It is a protozoan disease transmitted by the bite of infected female anopheles mosquito. Malaria has long featured prominently in the grey area between parasitology and hematology. This study has been...
متن کاملAbsence of Erythrocyte Sequestration and Lack of Multicopy Gene Family Expression in Plasmodium falciparum from a Splenectomized Malaria Patient
BACKGROUND To avoid spleen-dependent killing mechanisms parasite-infected erythrocytes (IE) of Plasmodium falciparum malaria patients have the capacity to bind to endothelial receptors. This binding also known as sequestration, is mediated by parasite proteins, which are targeted to the erythrocyte surface. Candidate proteins are those encoded by P. falciparum multicopy gene families, such as v...

متن کاملMolecular Evidence on Changing Pattern of Mixed Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax Infections during Year-Round Transmission of Malaria in Chahbahar, Iran
Mixed malaria infections, Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax, are suspected to occur at a greater frequency than is detected by conventional light microscopy. In order to determine the year round pattern of transmission and the frequency of mixed infections in malaria endemic area, we carried out a prospective comparison of diagnosis by conventional light microscopy and nested PCR in Chahbahar ...
